About Rembetiko Music:
The Greeks of Asia Minor were exiled from their homes in the early 1920’s. They sang their sorrows and pain while adjusting to life in mainland Greece. At the same time, Greek immigrants to America in the early 20th century, found refuge in music to express their longing for the motherland. Their stories are the tales of everyday men and women, the world of the underground, and life in the city slums, yet their music brought them dignity, gave them a voice. To this day, Rembetiko remains one of the most popular genres of Greek music.
The Band:
Mia Anasa - the Greek music group from the Boston area - comes to Maine! The band builds a bridge from the past to the present by performing many of the old Rembitiko songs and laika (folk songs). They strive to reach a wide audience of Greek music fans, philhellenes, aficionados and neophytes; using storytelling and translations to engage their audiences and introduce them to Greek culture and music.
