Biblia Mazi (Books Together)

The Murderess by Alexandros Papadiamantis

First published in 1903, this book is considered a classic of modern Greek literature. It is a story of crime and punishment, about Hadoula, an old woman who has lived a life of poverty and constant struggles. It takes place in an era when the lives of women were particularly difficult and constrained, especially in remote areas. Hadoula is driven into madness and relies on her deep connections to nature and the wilds to escape her fate. Papadiamantis was from the island of Skiathos, and had a career as a journalist and translator. As a writer, he became famous for his short stories and novellas. He is considered by many of his peers to be one of the great, if not greatest, prose writers of Greece.
