Ten Years Later - A Discussion of the Migration Crisis

In 2015, the island of Lesvos was ground zero for one of the greatest waves of migration to Europe since World War II. More than half a million people passed through or have been held, on Lesvos - an ongoing situation that has changed the island forever. We will use the compelling, well-written and researched account of a terrible shipwreck as a jumping off point. A Greek Tragedy by Jeanne Carstensen is a journalist’s account of a disaster in October 2015 in which more than 76 people drowned (more than 300 were rescued) off the coast of Lesvos when an overloaded vessel sank in rough seas. It was carrying refugees and migrants from the coast of Turkey to the island. You dont have to read the book to participate, but reading it beforehand would be ideal. Carstensen unpacks the larger story of the migrant crisis by telling the specific story of the shipwreck.
